Sclerotherapy after
small needle

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an extremely safe, office-based procedure that is often performed in less than half an hour. It is sometimes referred to as a "lunchtime" procedure because most patients may immediately return to their normal day after treatment.

Described by patients as nearly painless, sclerotherapy is performed using tiny needles to inject a sclerosant solution directly into varicose and spider veins to treat both the symptoms and the appearance of the veins.

Your sclerotherapy treatment may or may not involve the use of ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided "foam" sclerotherapy is used to treat larger varicose veins not easily seen at the surface of the skin. Smaller spider veins close to the skin's surface do not usually need ultrasound guidance, and visual treatment is all that is needed.

Results

Once injected, the veins will collapse and seal off flow from other, healthy veins, improving circulation.  The treated veins will shrink and fade over a period of weeks or months and will eventually be absorbed by your body.
